Richard Simonsen creates collages and assemblages. His recent works are constructed with combinations of wood, metal and found objects. These abstract compositions transform the materials beyond their original state, changed by painting, grinding, torching and sanding to reshape and color the surfaces. The fusion of these materials have an affinity to architecture with an urban industrial feel. The works walk the line between painting and sculpture.
My artworks are not concerned with what they might symbolize or represent, but what they are in themselves, be it texture, light, color or space. These are just the elements that create the structure of my works. The exploration of various materials, shapes and texture lead to unexpected discoveries. This is the inspiration for new ideas and works.
