Joonja Lee Mornes is an Asian-American artist who grew up in Seoul, Korea. Mornes is now living in Minnesota and works in the Casket Arts Building in NE Minneapolis. Mornes creates her paintings using inspiration from nature.
“I draw inspiration from watching nature in various light and seasonal phenomena,” Mornes said. In Mornes recent set of paintings she used mixed-media, using a layer of text which were mostly poems, as a base for the landscape paintings. “Some of these poems have been used in music by various contemporary composers as well as those of the past,” Mornes said. The interwoven images of landscape and calligraphic notes in Mornes recent set of paintings give a voice to her as an artist striving to harmonize living in-between cultures of the East and West.
“I am interweaving poetry, music, and dance in my paintings,” Mornes said. “The timelessness, meditation, and preservation of the beauty of our landscape are essential parts of my work.
