CANvas Uptown is community event and fundraiser that supports local businesses and creativity. Over the past few weeks, Minneapolis businesses and artists were invited to design and decorate one-gallon paint cans. Each business could design up to three cans, each representing their business in a creative manner. The businesses and their paint cans are featured in the CANvas Uptown Passport, which includes a special promotion for each business. Community members are then encouraged to travel from business to business to check out the cans and stamp their passport, while taking advantage of the limited-time promotions. Additionally, the cans are available for sale through online bidding from June 23rd to August 10th.

The team here at Art Force created three cans for the event. One day, during an Art Force Academy meeting, everyone brainstormed individually or in small teams and sketched out a design for the cans. We narrowed it down to our favorites and combined a few different sketches into one. Utilizing our talented graphic designer and onsite printing equipment, we were able to turn our team’s design into digital illustrations that we then printed on an adhesive paper. Adding in some extra paint to finish off the works, we came out with three unique paint cans, demonstrating the diverse talents that make up our team!

Arts & The Community

The proceeds raised from the CANvas auction will go towards programs and services that benefit the Uptown community. CANvas is an excellent example for a way in which the arts can unite and strengthen a community, both economically and socially. Local businesses get their creative juices flowing by designing the cans (artistic activities, no matter your skill level, are good for us all). Community members are encouraged to visit the local businesses, producing additional revenue. The auctioning off of the cans is then recycled back into the Uptown neighborhood, aimed at improving community life. It’s a win-win-win situation.

The Uptown Art Fair

The Uptown Art Fair features over 350 local and international artists. A variety of mediums will be for sale, such as painting, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, mixed-media, and photography. The fair also includes many musical performances, interactive arts activities, and a culinary arts competition. Alongside the professional artists, the Youth Art Fair provides artists ages 8-18 the opportunity to display and sell their work. The Uptown Art Fair will take place from August 5-7, 2016,
