Established in 2012 by the International Association of Art (IAA), World Art Day is an international celebration of the arts. The day promotes awareness of the arts across the globe while recognizing and supporting all forms of creative expression, such as the visual arts, creative writing, film, and music.

History of World Art Day
On April 5-6, 2011, the General Assembly of AIAP/IAA World held its 17th annual meeting in Guadalajara, where they voted to make the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci, April 15, “World Art Day.” Galleries and museums are encouraged to have extended hours, hold conferences and panel discussions during the day, and host celebratory events in the evening. Due to Leonardo da Vinci’s multifaceted talents – he was a renowned painter, sculptor, writer, innovator, philosopher, and thinker – his birthday was an ideal selection for a day celebrating all things creative.

IAA World President Rosa Maria Burillo Velasco stated, “Art is the most genuine expression of the human soul, shaped in images words, sounds and movements enduring reflections that describe us the story of humanity. World Art Day will permit to all the artists and art lovers of the world, to feel the power and the preciousness of art simultaneously and let all of us breathe its importance for all nations of the World.”
In addition to the events held at local art institutions that celebrate creativity in general, national committees in Sweden, France, South Africa, Slovakia, and Venezuela have organized large-scale public events in honor of Leonardo da Vinci.
